INCIDENTRATESIncidentratesareanindicationofhowmanyincidentshaveoccurred,orhowseveretheywere.Theyaremeasurementsonlyofpastperformanceorlaggingindicators.Incidentratesarealsoonlyoneofmanyitemsthatcanbeusedformeasuringperformance.Therearemanyitemsthatshouldbeusedtomeasureperformance,mostofwhicharepositiveinnature;incidentratestendtobeviewedasanindicationofsomethingthatiswrongwithasafetysystem,ratherthanwhatispositiveorrightaboutthesystem.Inspiteofthis,formanycompanies,incidentratesremaintheprimaryindicatorofsafetyperformancemeasurement.Thisisprimarilybecauseincidentratesarefairlyeasytofigureout,andcanbeeasilycomparedbetweenonecompanyandanother,andareusedthroughoutindustry.Themostdifficultpartaboutincidentratesisthatthefivemajortypesofratesareeasilyconfusedwithoneanother.ThemostcommonrateusedistheRecordableIncidentRate.Thisiscommonlycalledeitherthe“totalcaseincidentrate”orjustthe“incidentrate”.The“LostTimeCaseRate”(LTC)isthesecondmostcommonlyused.The“LostWorkdayRate”and“SeverityRate”areprimarilyusedonlyinlargercompaniesthathavealargernumberofLostTimeCases.ThenewestincidentratetypeiscalledtheDARTor“DaysAway/RestrictedorTransferRate”.DEFINITIONS:DART(DaysAway/RestrictedorTransferRate)–Amathematicalcalculationthatdescribesthenumberofrecordableinjuriesandillnessesper100full-timeemployeesthatresultedindaysawayfromwork,restrictedworkactivityand/orjobtransferthatacompanyhasexperiencedinanygiventimeframe.LOSTTIMECASE–Anyoccupationalinjuryorillnesswhichresultsinanemployeebeingunabletoworkafullassignedworkshift.(AfatalityisnotconsideredaLTC.)Losttimecasesresultwhentherearenoreasonablecircumstancesunderwhichtheinjuredemployeecouldreturntomeaningfulwork.Itisassumedthatifanemployeecouldwork,evenifitisnottheirnormallyassignedduties,alternatetasksthataccommodatetherestrictivenatureofaninjurywouldbeassignedtotheemployee.Inthissituation,thedaysarerecordedasRESTRICTEDWORKDAYS,ratherthanLostWorkDays.(Notethatworkingfromhome,onacomputeroratotherassignedtasks,isnotconsideredrestrictedworkactivityunlesstheemployeewouldnormallyperformthisfunctionfromhomeaspartoftheirassignedwork.Situationslikethiswouldbeconsideredlostworkdays.Theincident,ifemployeescanreporttotheirnormalworkplace,andtheycanbeassignedandcompleteproductivetaskstobenefitthecompany,canbeconsideredrestrictedworkdays,ratherthanlostworkdays.)LOSTWORKDAYRATE–amathematicalcalculationthatdescribesthenumberoflostworkdaysper100full-timeemployeesinanygiventimeframe.LOSTTIMECASERATE–amathematicalcalculationthatdescribesthenumberoflosttimecasesper100full-timeemployeesinanygiventimeframe.OCCUPATIONALINJURY–Anyinjury(includingafatality)whichresultsfromawork-relatedincidentorexposureinvolvingasingleincident.Examplesare:•Thermalandchemicalburns•Cuts,abrasionsandpunctures•Fracturesorcrushinginjuries•Respiratoryirritations•Instantaneoushearingloss•Amputations•Sprainsorstrains•BrokenbonesOCCUPATIONILLNESS–Anyabnormalconditionordisorder(otherthananinjury)thatresultedfromawork-relatedexposuretoabiological,chemicalorphysicalagent.Theseincludebothacuteandchronicillnessesordiseasesthatmaybecausedbyinhalation,absorption,ingestionordirectcontact.Someexamplesare:CATEGORYEXAMPLESSkindiseasesDermatitis,eczemaorrashthatiscausedbyplants,oil,acne,chromiculcers,chemicalcontact,orinflammation.LungdiseasesSilicosis,asbestosis,pneumoconiosis,...
