FIREPREVENTIONPLANThepurposeofthisFirePreventionPlanistoeliminatethecausesoffire,preventlossoflifeandpropertybyfire,andtocomplywiththeOccupationalSafetyandHealthAdministration’s(OSHA)standardonfireprevention,29CFR1910.39.Itprovidesemployeeswithinformationandguidelinesthatwillassisttheminrecognizing,reporting,andcontrollingfirehazards.Thefollowingtablelistssomepossiblecausesoffiresandrecommendedpreventativemeasures.SourcesofIgnitionExamplesPreventiveMeasuresElectricalequipmentElectricaldefects,generallyduetopoormaintenance,mostlyinwiring,motorsswitches,lampsandhotelements.Useonlyapprovedequipment.FollowNationalElectricalCode.Establishregularmaintenance.FrictionHotbearings,misalignedorbrokenmachineparts,pooradjustment.Followaregularscheduleofinspectionmaintenanceandlubrication.OpenflamesCuttingandweldingtorches,gasoilburners,misuseofgasolinetorches.CandlesFollowestablishedweldingprecautions.Keepburnerscleanandproperlyadjusted.Donotuseopenflamesnearcombustibles.EstablishafirewatchsystemBurningcandlesarenotallowedintheworkplaceSmokingandmatchesDangerousnearflammableliquidsandinareaswherecombustiblesarestoredorused.Smokeonlyinpermittedareas.Makesurematchesareout.Useappropriatereceptacles.StaticelectricityOccurswhereliquidorsolidsflowsfrompipes.Groundequipment.Usestaticeliminators.HumidifytheatmosphereHotsurfacesExposureofcombustiblestoFurnaces,electriclampsorirons.AlsoinvolveskitchenappliancesliketoastersorcoffeemakersProvideampleclearances,insulation,andaircirculation.Checkheatingapparatuspriortoleavingitunattended.Flammablegas/liquid,andCombustibleMaterialsGasoline,Paints,Thinners,Cardboard,Paper,HydrogengasStorematerialsinapprovedcabinets,keepawayfromheatsources,adheretohousekeepingschedulesGENERALGUIDELINESTolimittheriskoffireandreducelossesduetofire,employeesshalltakethefollowingprecautions:Minimizethestorageofcombustiblematerials.Makesurethatdoors,hallways,stairs,andotherexitroutesarekeptfreeofobstructions.Disposeofcombustiblewasteincovered,airtight,metalcontainers.Useandstoreflammablematerialsinwell-ventilatedareasawayfromignitionsources.Useonlynonflammablecleaningproducts.Keepincompatible(i.e.,chemicallyreactive)substancesawayfromeachother.Perform“hotwork”(i.e.,weldingorworkingwithanopenflameorotherignitionsources)incontrolledandwell-ventilatedareasandmaintainafirewatch.Keepequipmentingoodworkingorder(i.e.,inspectelectricalwiringandappliancesregularlyandkeepmotorsandmachinetoolsfreeofdustandgrease.Ensurethatheatingunitsaresafeguarded.Repairandcleanupflammableliquidleaksimmediately.Keepworkareasfreeofdust,lint,sawdust,scraps,andsimilarmaterial.Keepoilyragsinacoveredcontaineranddisposeoftheminatimelymanner.Donotrelyonextensioncordsifwiringimprovementsareneeded,andtakecarenottooverloadcircuitswithmultiplepiecesofequipment.Ensurethatrequiredhotworkpermitsareobtained.Don’trefuelgasoline-poweredequipmentwhileitishot.Turnoffelectricalequipmentwhennotinuse.Post“NoSmoking”cautionsignsnearthestorageareasDon’tallowmaterialtoblockautomaticsprinklersystems,ortobepiledaroundfireextinguisherlocations.Toobtaintheproperdistributionofwater,aminimumof18inchesofclearspacemustbemaintainedbelowsprinklerdeflectors.Iftherearenosprinklers,a2footclearancebetweenpiledmaterialandtheceilingmustbemaintainedtopermituseofhosestreams.Reportallgasleaksimmediately.Fireextinguishersshouldbemounted,labeledandeasilyaccessibleFireextinguishersshouldbeinspectedmonthlyandservicedannuallyExtinguishersshouldbespacedevery75’aroundregularcombustibleslikepaperandwood.Ifthereareflammableliquidslikegasolineinthearea,thereshouldbeanextinguisherevery50’.NeverkeepafirerateddoorproppedopenHeatproducingequipment(microwaves,toasters,coffeemakers,etc.)shouldnotbeleftunattendedwhileinusePropanetanksshouldnotbestorednexttoexits,stairwaysorhightrafficareasPropanetanksshouldbefreefromdefectsandinproperworkingconditionThenameorjobtitleofemployee(s)responsibleformaintainingequipmenttopreventorcontrolsourcesofignitionorfires(Name/JobTitle_______________)Thenameorjobtitleofemployee(s)responsibleforthecontroloffuelsourcehazards(Name/JobTitle____________________)EMERGENCYEXITSEveryexitmustbeclearlyvisible,orthepathtoitconspicuouslyidentifiedinsuchamannerthateveryoccupantofthebuildingwillknowthebestwaytogetoutofthebuildinginafireorotheremergency.Exitsandexitroutesmustneverbeobstructed.Anydoororpassagewaythatisnotanexitorpathtoanexitmustbeidentifiedwithasignthatreads‘NotanExit’orasignthatindicatesitsactualuse,suchasstorage.Allexitsignsmusteitherbeself-illuminating,orilluminatedbyareliableexternallightsource.
