RESEARCHARTICLESCURRENTSCIENCE,VOL.118,NO.2,25JANUARY2020243*Forcorrespondence.(e-mail:shkhahro@psu.edu.sa)Occupationalaccidents:acomparativestudyofconstructionandmanufacturingindustriesShabirHussainKhahro1,*,TauhaHussainAli2,NafeesAhmedMemon2andZubairAhmedMemon11DepartmentofEngineeringManagement,PrinceSultanUniversity,Riyadh,SaudiArabia2CivilEngineeringDepartment,MahranUniversityofEngineeringandTechnology,JamshoroAtpresent,severaldevelopingcountriesshowinterestinsafety-relatedissuesasawaytoreduceoccupation-alaccidentsintheworkplace.Theliteraturedepictsthatsafetycultureisamultidimensionalidea.Occu-pationalaccidentssignificantlyaffecthumancapital,andhaveanegativeimpactonproductivityandcom-petitivenessoftheworkersinparticularandprojectingeneral.Thereisstillashortageofpreventiveprac-ticesandcommitmenttosatisfactorymanagementforoccupationalaccidentsandpaucityofsafetyculturewithincompanies.Constructionandmanufacturingindustriesareconsideredtoberisky,havingahigherrateofoccupationalaccidentsresultinginhighertem-poraryandpermanentinjuriesandfatalities.Bothhavethehighestoccupationalaccidentratesrecordedthroughouttheworldaftertheagricultureindustry.ThisstudyprovidesacomparativeanalysisofvariouskindsofoccupationalaccidentsandtheircausesinbothindustriesinPakistan.Aqualitativestudyhasbeencarriedoutontheoccupationalaccidentsfre-quentlyoccurringinbothindustries.Thesignificantimpactsofaccidentsarealsoevaluatedinthisstudy.Theinputhasbeenreceivedfromprofessionalswork-inginbothindustriesforalongtime.Relativeimpor-tanceweightandquadrantdistributionmethodsisusedforinformationanalysis.Thestudyshowsthat‘fallfromelevation,electrocutionfromdefectivetools,snakebite,caughtbetweenandfallatfloorlevel’arethemostcommontypesofoccupationalaccidentsinbothindustries.Poorsiteconditionandequipmentarethecommoncausesforoccupationalaccidents.Thisstudyhelpsindevelopingproactivemeasuresinbothindustriestopreventoccupationalaccidents.Thiswillresultinsavingcompensationcostsaswellasworkinghours,safeandsuccessfulcompletionofprojectsandmaintainingthereputationofthecompanies.Keywords:Comparativeanalysis,constructionandmanufacturingindustries,occupationalaccidents,pro-activemeasures.INDUSTRIESplayamajorroleinthesocio-economicdevelopmentofanycountry.Thesignificanceandroleofdifferentindustrieshavebeenconfirmedbyseveralstudies.Theconstructionandmanufacturingindustriescontributesignificantlytoacountry’sgrossdomesticproduct(GDP).Bothindustriesaresaidtoberiskyenter-priseduetotheirexcessivechargeofinjuries,fatalities,occupationalaccidents,peoplerepaymentpriceandlossofworkinghours1–3.Bothrecordedhighestoccupationalaccidentsworldovercomparedtootherlabour-intensiveindustries.Bothindustriesarecloselyassociatedwiththefieldofcivilengineeringandhencewerechoosehereasacasestudy.Therearenumerousfactorsleadingtohazard-oussituationsattheworksite,whicharedifficulttoquantifyduetovariousreasonscloselyassociatedwiththewayworkactivitiesareperformedinbothindustries;butworkersintheconstructionindustryperceivelessjobsafetycomparedtothemanufacturingindustry.Thereasonistheactivitytype,whichincludesoperatingmachines,painting,electrocutionfittings,etc.andallactivitiesareassignedtasksatdifferentworkplaces4.Constructionworkersperformdifferenttasksatdifferentplaces,whe-reastheworkersinthemanufacturingindustrydothesametasksatthesameplace,andthetasks...
