Page1of9Doc.No.IITB/ISG/01/Rev.0EquipmentSafetyIntroductionSomeofthehazardsrelatedwithequipmentusedinresearchlabsincludeElectricalhazardsHotsurfacewhichcancauseburnsandwhichcanbeasourceofignition.HighnoiselevelsUnguardedrotatingpartsUseofvacuumwhichcancauseimplosion.UseofhighpressureGenerationofmagneticfieldsUltravioletandinfraredradiationManyaccidentsinresearchlaboratoriesresultfromimproperuseandlackofmaintenanceofequipment.Thefollowingprecautionsmustbeadoptedwhileworkingwithequipmentinthelaboratory.Refertheoperatingmanual/usermanualoftheequipmentbeforestartingoperation.Themanualwillcontaindetailsofhazardsandsafetyprecautionstobetakenduringinstallation,operationandmaintenance.Theoperatingmanualsofequipmentmustbelocatedataneasilyaccessiblelocationinthelaboratory.Personnelwhoarenotauthorisedandtrainedmustnotcarryoutoperationoftheequipment.Newusersmustcarryouttheoperationunderguidanceofseniorresearchscholars.Ascheduleformaintenanceandinspectionofequipmentmustbepreparedaspermanufacturer’sinstructionandmustbeadheredto.Unauthorisedmaintenanceactivitymustnotbedone.Servicepersonnelmustbecontactedwhererequired.Switchoffandunplugtheequipmentwhilemakingadjustments.Switchofftheequipmentattheendoftheoperationandwhennotinuse.Page2of9Doc.No.IITB/ISG/01/Rev.0EquipmentSafetyUsepersonalprotectiveequipmentasrecommendedbythemanufacturerwhileoperatingtheequipment.Equipmentwithspecifichazardsmustnotbeleftunattended.Displaycontactdetailsandactiontobetakenincaseofemergencyneartheequipment.Displaycautionsignagestowarnvisitorsaboutthehazards.Equipmentoutoforderornotinusemustbelabelled.Precautionsmustbetakentopreventinadvertentenergisationoftheequipmentduringmaintenanceactivities.Highpressureequipmentmustnotbelocatedinsidethelaboratoryworkarea.Samemustbeinaseparateroom.Page3of9Doc.No.IITB/ISG/01/Rev.0EquipmentSafetyStandardoperatingprocedures(SOP)mustbepreparedandfollowed.Sourceofpowermustbeataneasilyaccessiblelocationsothatitcanbeswitchedoffquicklyincaseofemergency.Electricwiresofequipmentmustnotbelaidalongthepassagewhereitcanbeatriphazard.Samemustbekeptawayfromhotsurfaceswhichcancausedamagetotheinsulationofthewire.Emergencystopswitchmustbeprominentlylabelled.Rotatingpartsoftheequipmentmustbeguarded.Looseclothing,jewelrythatcangetentangledmustnotbeused.Confinelonghairwhileworkinginthelaboratory.Alwaysusesafetyglasseswhileworkingwithlaboratoryequipment.CommonlyusedlaboratoryequipmentandprecautionstobetakenduringusageHeatingDevicesEnsurethattheheatingelementoftheequipmentisingoodcondition.Iftheelementsareexposed,ensurethatitisrepairedorreplaced.Variabletransformersmustbeplacedoutsidethefumehood.Thishelpstopreventspillageofchemicals/wateroveritandpreventchancesofignitionofflammablevapoursduetothesparkproducedbyit.Electricalconnectionstotheheatingdevicemustbefullyinsulatedtopreventelectricshock.Keepcombustiblematerialsawayfromheatingdevices.Caretobetakentopreventchemicalsfromcomingincontactwiththeheatingelement.Overheatingoftheheatingequipmentcanleadtofire.Useoftemperaturesensingdeviceshelpstocutoffpowerifthereisasuddenincreaseoftemperature.Displaycautionsignagestowarnagainsthotsurface.Page4of9Doc.No.IITB/ISG/01/Rev.0EquipmentSafetyOvensLaboratoryovensmustnotbeusedforheatingfooditems,astheairinsidewouldbecontaminated.Ensuret...
