193OccupationalSafetyandHealthAdmin.,Labor§1926.150SubpartF—FireProtectionandPreventionAUTHORITY:Sec.107,ContractWorkHoursandSafetyStandardsAct(40U.S.C.333);secs.4,6,and8,OccupationalSafetyandHealthActof1970(29U.S.C.653,655,657);SecretaryofLabor’sOrderNo.12–71(36FR8754),8–76(41FR25059),9–83(48FR35736),or6–96(62FR111)asapplicable;and29CFRpart1911.§1926.150Fireprotection.(a)Generalrequirements.(1)Theem-ployershallberesponsibleforthede-velopmentofafireprotectionprogramtobefollowedthroughoutallphasesoftheconstructionanddemolitionwork,andheshallprovideforthefirefightingequipmentasspecifiedinthissubpart.Asfirehazardsoccur,thereshallbenodelayinprovidingthenecessaryequip-ment.(2)Accesstoallavailablefirefightingequipmentshallbemaintainedatalltimes.(3)Allfirefightingequipment,pro-videdbytheemployer,shallbecon-spicuouslylocated.(4)Allfirefightingequipmentshallbeperiodicallyinspectedandmain-tainedinoperatingcondition.Defec-tiveequipmentshallbeimmediatelyreplaced.(5)Aswarrantedbytheproject,theemployershallprovideatrainedandequippedfirefightingorganization(FireBrigade)toassureadequatepro-tectiontolife.(b)Watersupply.(1)Atemporaryorpermanentwatersupply,ofsufficientvolume,duration,andpressure,re-quiredtoproperlyoperatethefire-fightingequipmentshallbemadeavailableassoonascombustiblemate-rialsaccumulate.(2)Whereundergroundwatermainsaretobeprovided,theyshallbein-stalled,completed,andmadeavailableforuseassoonaspracticable.(c)Portablefirefightingequipment—(1)Fireextinguishersandsmallhoselines.(i)Afireextinguisher,ratednotlessthan2A,shallbeprovidedforeach3,000squarefeetoftheprotectedbuildingarea,ormajorfractionthereof.Traveldistancefromanypointofthepro-tectedareatothenearestfireextin-guishershallnotexceed100feet.(ii)One55-gallonopendrumofwaterwithtwofirepailsmaybesubstitutedforafireextinguisherhavinga2Arat-ing.(iii)A1⁄2-inchdiametergarden-typehoseline,nottoexceed100feetinlengthandequippedwithanozzle,maybesubstitutedfora2A-ratedfireextin-guisher,providingitiscapableofdis-chargingaminimumof5gallonsperminutewithaminimumhosestreamrangeof30feethorizontally.Thegar-den-typehoselinesshallbemountedonconventionalracksorreels.Thenumberandlocationofhoseracksorreelsshallbesuchthatatleastonehosestreamcanbeappliedtoallpointsinthearea.(iv)Oneormorefireextinguishers,ratednotlessthan2A,shallbepro-videdoneachfloor.Inmultistorybuildings,atleastonefireextinguishershallbelocatedadjacenttostairway.(v)Extinguishersandwaterdrums,subjecttofreezing,shallbeprotectedfromfreezing.(vi)Afireextinguisher,ratednotlessthan10B,shallbeprovidedwithin50feetofwherevermorethan5gallonsofflammableorcombustibleliquidsor5poundsofflammablegasarebeingusedonthejobsite.Thisrequirementdoesnotapplytotheintegralfueltanksofmotorvehicles.(vii)Carbontetrachlorideandothertoxicvaporizingliquidfireextin-guishersareprohibited.(viii)PortablefireextinguishersshallbeinspectedperiodicallyandmaintainedinaccordancewithMainte-nanceandUseofPortableFireExtin-guishers,NFPANo.10A–1970.(ix)Fireextinguisherswhichhavebeenlistedorapprovedbyanationallyrecognizedtestinglaboratory,shallbeusedtomeettherequirementsofthissubpart.(x)TableF–1maybeusedasaguideforselectingtheappropriateportablefireextinguishers.VerDateMar<15>201015:51Sep16,2011Jkt223116PO00000Frm00203Fmt8010Sfmt8010Q:\29\29V8.TXTofr150PsN:PC15019429CFRCh.XVII(7–1–11Edition)§1926.150(2)Firehos...
