509OccupationalSafetyandHealthAdmin.,Labor§1910.160systemsorportionsthereofareidenti-fiedandthatthelocation,numberofsprinklersinthehydraulicallyde-signedsection,andthebasisofthede-signisindicated.Centralrecordsmaybeusedinlieuofsignsatsprinklervalvesprovidedtherecordsareavail-ableforinspectionandcopyingbytheAssistantSecretary.[45FR60710,Sept.12,1980;46FR24557,May1,1981]§1910.160Fixedextinguishingsys-tems,general.(a)Scopeandapplication.(1)Thissec-tionappliestoallfixedextinguishingsystemsinstalledtomeetaparticularOSHAstandardexceptforautomaticsprinklersystemswhicharecoveredby§1910.159.(2)Thissectionalsoappliestofixedsystemsnotinstalledtomeetapar-ticularOSHAstandard,butwhich,bymeansoftheiroperation,mayexposeemployeestopossibleinjury,death,oradversehealthconsequencescausedbytheextinguishingagent.Suchsystemsareonlysubjecttotherequirementsofparagraphs(b)(4)through(b)(7)and(c)ofthissection.(3)Systemsotherwisecoveredinparagraph(a)(2)ofthissectionwhichareinstalledinareaswithnoemployeeexposureareexemptedfromthere-quirementsofthissection.(b)Generalrequirements.(1)Fixedex-tinguishingsystemcomponentsandagentsshallbedesignedandapprovedforuseonthespecificfirehazardstheyareexpectedtocontrolorextinguish.(2)Ifforanyreasonafixedextin-guishingsystembecomesinoperable,theemployershallnotifyemployeesandtakethenecessarytemporarypre-cautionstoassuretheirsafetyuntilthesystemisrestoredtooperatingorder.Anydefectsorimpairmentsshallbeproperlycorrectedbytrainedpersonnel.(3)Theemployershallprovideadis-tinctivealarmorsignalingsystemwhichcomplieswith§1910.165andisca-pableofbeingperceivedaboveambientnoiseorlightlevels,onallextin-guishingsystemsinthoseportionsoftheworkplacecoveredbytheextin-guishingsystemtoindicatewhentheextinguishingsystemisdischarging.Dischargealarmsarenotrequiredonsystemswheredischargeisimme-diatelyrecognizable.(4)Theemployershallprovideeffec-tivesafeguardstowarnemployeesagainstentryintodischargeareaswheretheatmosphereremainshaz-ardoustoemployeesafetyorhealth.(5)Theemployershallposthazardwarningorcautionsignsattheen-tranceto,andinsideof,areaspro-tectedbyfixedextinguishingsystemswhichuseagentsinconcentrationsknowntobehazardoustoemployeesafetyandhealth.(6)Theemployershallassurethatfixedsystemsareinspectedannuallybyapersonknowledgeableinthede-signandfunctionofthesystemtoas-surethatthesystemismaintainedingoodoperatingcondition.(7)Theemployershallassurethattheweightandpressureofrefillablecontainersischeckedatleastsemi-an-nually.Ifthecontainershowsalossinnetcontentorweightofmorethan5percent,oralossinpressureofmorethan10percent,itshallbesubjectedtomaintenance.(8)Theemployershallassurethatfactorychargednonrefillablecon-tainerswhichhavenomeansofpres-sureindicationareweighedatleastsemi-annually.Ifacontainershowsalossinnetweightormorethan5per-centitshallbereplaced.(9)Theemployershallassurethatin-spectionandmaintenancedatesarere-cordedonthecontainer,onatagat-tachedtothecontainer,orinacentrallocation.Arecordofthelastsemi-an-nualcheckshallbemaintaineduntilthecontainerischeckedagainorforthelifeofthecontainer,whicheverisless.(10)Theemployershalltrainemploy-eesdesignatedtoinspect,maintain,op-erate,orrepairfixedextinguishingsys-temsandannuallyreviewtheirtrain-ingtokeepthemup-to-dateinthefunctionstheyaretoperform.(11)Theemployershallnotusechlorobromomethaneorcarbontetra-chlorideasanextinguishingagentw...
