OSHA–29CFR1910SubpartQ–Welding,CuttingandBrazingContent1910.251Definitions1910.252GeneralRequirements1910.253Oxygen-FuelGasWeldingandCutting1910.254ArcWeldingandCutting1910.255ResistanceWelding§1910.251Definitions.Asusedinthissubpart:(a)Welderandweldingoperatormeananyoperatorofelectricorgasweldingandcuttingequipment.(b)Approvedmeanslistedorapprovedbyanationallyrecognizedtestinglaboratory.Referto§1910.155(c)(3)fordefinitionsoflistedandapproved,and§1910.7fornationallyrecognizedtestinglaboratory.§1910.252GeneralRequirements.(a)Firepreventionandprotection—(1)Basicprecautions.Forelaborationofthesebasicprecautionsandofthespecialprecautionsofparagraph(a)(2)ofthissectionaswellasadelineationofthefireprotectionandpreventionresponsibilitiesofweldersandcutters,theirsupervisors(includingoutsidecontractors)andthoseinmanagementonwhosepropertycuttingandweldingistobeperformed,seeStandardforFirePreventioninUseofCuttingandWeldingProcesses,NFPAStandard51B,1962,whichisincorporatedbyreferenceasspecifiedin§1910.6.Thebasicprecautionsforfirepreventioninweldingorcuttingworkare:(i)Firehazards.Iftheobjecttobeweldedorcutcannotreadilybemoved,allmovablefirehazardsinthevicinityshallbetakentoasafeplace.(ii)Guards.Iftheobjecttobeweldedorcutcannotbemovedandifallthefirehazardscannotberemoved,thenguardsshallbeusedtoconfinetheheat,sparks,andslag,andtoprotecttheimmovablefirehazards.(iii)Restrictions.Iftherequirementsstatedinparagraphs(a)(1)(i)and(a)(1)(ii)ofthissectioncannotbefollowedthenweldingandcuttingshallnotbeperformed.(2)Specialprecautions.Whenthenatureoftheworktobeperformedfallswithinthescopeofparagraph(a)(1)(ii)ofthissectioncertainadditionalprecautionsmaybenecessary:(i)Combustiblematerial.Whereverthereareflooropeningsorcracksintheflooringthatcannotbeclosed,precautionsshallbetakensothatnoreadilycombustiblematerialsonthefloorbelowwillbeexposedtosparkswhichmightdropthroughthefloor.Thesameprecautionsshallbeobservedwithregardtocracksorholesinwalls,opendoorwaysandopenorbrokenwindows.(ii)Fireextinquishers.Suitablefireextinguishingequipmentshallbemaintainedinastateofreadinessforinstantuse.Suchequipmentmayconsistofpailsofwater,bucketsofsand,hoseorportableextinguishersdependinguponthenatureandquantityofthecombustiblematerialexposed.(iii)Firewatch.(A)Firewatchersshallberequiredwheneverweldingorcuttingisperformedinlocationswhereotherthanaminorfiremightdevelop,oranyofthefollowingconditionsexist:(1)Appreciablecombustiblematerial,inbuildingconstructionorcontents,closerthan35feet(10.7m)tothepointofoperation.(2)Appreciablecombustiblesaremorethan35feet(10.7m)awaybutareeasilyignitedbysparks.(3)Wallorflooropeningswithina35-foot(10.7m)radiusexposecombustiblematerialinadjacentareasincludingconcealedspacesinwallsorfloors.(4)Combustiblematerialsareadjacenttotheoppositesideofmetalpartitions,walls,ceilings,orroofsandarelikelytobeignitedbyconductionorradiation.(B)Firewatchersshallhavefireextinguishingequipmentreadilyavailableandbetrainedinitsuse.Theyshallbefamiliarwithfacilitiesforsoundinganalarmintheeventofafire.Theyshallwatchforfiresinallexposedareas,trytoextinguishthemonlywhenobviouslywithinthecapacityoftheequipmentavailable,orotherwisesoundthealarm.Afirewatchshallbemaintainedforatleastahalfhouraftercompletionofweldingorcuttingoperationstodetectandextinguishpossiblesmolderingfires.(iv)Authorization.Beforecuttingorwe...
