9.0INDUSTRIALSAFETYRULESANDINFORMATION9.1GeneralInformationSafetyisespeciallyimportantforemployeesandstudentswhoworkinindustrialenvironmentsbecauseofthehighernumberofrisksintheseareas.Universitydepartmentsthatutilizeindustrialmachinery,largeamountsofmechanicalequipment,devicesthatoperateunderhighvoltage(208v.orhigher),radiationandhazardousmaterials,and/orheavyoff-roadequipmentalsoqualifyasindustrialareasandshouldfollowtheseguidelines.9.2IndustrialSafetyGuidelinesInformationinthissectionaddressesspecifichazardsandotherareasofsafetythatpertaintopersonswhoworkinindustrialenvironmentsasdescribedinsection9.1.Theseguidelinesandpoliciesaretobefollowedinadditiontothosegivenintheprevioussectionongeneralsafetyrulesandinformation.9.21PersonalProtectiveEquipmentNote:InformationinthissectionisbasedonregulationssetforthinOSHA1910.132through1910.138.Toreviewmoredetailsonthismatter,consult:http://www.osha-slc.gov/OshStd_data/1910_0132.html.PersonalProtectiveEquipmentHazardAssessmentswereconductedonallHigh-RiskareaswithintheUniversityinMayandJune2012.Areasassessedincluded:MechanicEngineering&IndustrialTechnologymetalshops,Chemistry&BiologyLaboratories,themetalandwoodworkingshopsintheCollegeoftheArts,Chemical,Civil,&PetroleumEngineeringLabs,andallshopsintheFacilitiesManagement:Electrical,Carpentry,Plumbing,HVAC,Paint,MotorPool,Welding,Grounds,andSpecialEvents.ThesesassessmentswereconductedbytheAssistantDirectorofEnvironmental,HealthandSafety,alongwiththeLab/ShopManagers&ShopFormanineachoftheabovelistedareas.ResultswerediscussedandenforcedwithallLab/ShopManagers&ShopForman.TheResultsoftheseassessmentsweredocumentedonOSHAapprovedformsandareonfileintheEH&SofficeatParkerHall.PersonalProtectiveEquipment(PPE)isanythingthatisusedtoprotectthehumanbodyfromthedangersofhazards.PPEisusedtoprotectaperson’seyes,face,ears,head,extremities,respiratorysystem,andotherpartsofhisorherbody.StatisticsandotherdatashowthatfailuretousePPEisaleadingcauseofaccidents.EveryemployeeandstudentisresponsibleforusingPPEwheneverataskorjobrequiresit.SupervisorsandDepartmentalSafetyCoordinatorsareresponsibleformakingsurethatPPEisavailableandingoodworkingcondition.Whenevernecessary,departmentsarerequiredtoprovidePPEtoitsemployeesandstudents.DepartmentalsupervisorsmustensurethatallemployeesandstudentsknowhowtousePPEproperly.WheneveranemployeeorstudentprovidestheirownPPE,thensupervisorsareresponsibleforinspectingitandassuringitsadequacyandsanitation.AnyonewhoknowinglyfailstousePPEisasubjecttodisciplinaryaction.HeadProtection:ANSIZ89.1-1986TheUniversityshallensurethateachaffectedemployeeusesappropriateheadprotectionwhenexposedtooverheadhazardsfromelectricalshock,burnhazards,impacthazardsandpenetrationhazards.Headprotectionisrequiredwhenexposedto:objectsfallingfromabove,possibleheadbumpsagainstfixedobjects,possibilityofcontactwithelectricalhazards,etc.HardhatsmustmeetANSIZ-89.1-1986specifications,asrequiredbyOSHAThereare3classesofhardhats:ClassAhardhat:(GeneralIndustry)Impactandpenetrationresistancew/limitedvoltageprotection(upto2,200volts)ClassEhardhat:(formerlyclassB)Highestlevelofprotectionagainstelectricalhazards,(upto20,000volts)Protectsagainstimpact,penetrationandflying/fallinghazardsClassChardhat:Lightweightcomfortandimpactprotectionbutoffernoprotectionfromelectricalhazards.Assessmentsdeterminewhenandwherehardhatsa...
